Hike to Santo Cristo Lake from Gavidia

Largest reserve of fresh water in the Andes of Venezuela, the Santo Cristo lake is magnificent, among other things, thanks to the mountains that flow into the water. Note: The hike described here in two days and one night is only possible if you choose the round trip private transport option. By public transport, the excursion last 4 days and 3 nights.

Day 1: From Gavidia to Santo Cristo lake

From Mérida it will take us about 2 hours in a 4*4 to get to Gavidia, the starting point of the hike at 3400 meters above sea level. The well-marked path begins at the bottom of the valley with its torrent of crystal clear waters. The path climbs gradually passing through several high altitude lakes to reach the Santo Cristo pass at 4100 meters above sea level. Watch out for the cold because the wind can blow hard here. We finally descend again by a small perfectly traced path to finally reach the lagoon of Santo Cristo, the largest reservoir of fresh water in the Andes of Venezuela. We will find two shelters on site in case of bad weather. We will have walked for 6 to 7 hours and will sleep at 3700 meters above sea level.

Day 2: From Santo Cristo Lake to Gavidia.

It is possible to extend this hike and enjoy an OFF day on site. We will eventually return to Gavidia by the same route as on the first day. For people wishing to travel by public transport, it will take an extra day to get on first day and another to get back to Mucuchies (Nearest bus station) and then Gavidia. These days can be used to discover the lagoon of Misteque.
